History:
The O’KEIKI Baseball Club concept was founded in March 1984 as the brainchild of Coach Al Muramoto and Coach Sal Godoy who met when their sons played T-ball together at Frontier Little League in Cerritos, California. The two shared a unique style of coaching and a real love for the game of baseball. Their desire to share this “love for baseball” with their community’s youth led to the first O’KEIKI Baseball Club clinic in the fall of 1986. The response was overwhelming. The anticipated turnout of approximately 20 players soon grew to more than 50 players. Clinic participants were instructed in the baseball fundamentals of fielding, batting, bunting, pitching, base running and sliding, but most importantly on the O’KEIKI Principles that stress teamwork and the development of character and self-esteem. With the success of the first clinic and the encouragement of the participants and parents, a second clinic was scheduled for the fall of 1988 and the development of long-range goals started taking direction. O’KEIKI Baseball Club’s long range goal was to become a traveling youth baseball team. Plans were curtailed when both the Godoy and Muramoto families moved from Cerritos in 1988/1989. Coach Al and his family moved to La Habra, California and Coach Sal and his family to his native Oxnard, California. The two families became involved with their new community baseball leagues but continued to keep in close contact.
In the summer of 1991, Coach Al decided to resurrect the “dream” of the traveling team and the first O’KEIKI Baseball Club traveling team was established in La Habra. The team participated in its first youth baseball tournament in Long Beach, California and the experiences were very rewarding. Coach Sal and his son were invited to join the core team of ten (10) La Habra area boys who were to participate in the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) winter baseball circuit. The team added four (4) players from the Oxnard area and competed against high caliber teams throughout the Southern California area in tournaments in Fallbrook, Del Obispo/Dana Point, South Gate, Whittier, and Los Alamitos. Initially the team struggled, however the most valuable lesson learned that first season was that determination and hard work equate success, which showed in O’KEIKI Baseball Club’s second (2nd) place finish at the 1991 Los Alamitos Thanksgiving Day Tournament in the divisional age group of 11-12.
In the fall of 1992, Coach Sal Godoy and Gil Ramirez organized the first all Ventura County youth baseball team – GOLD COAST PIRATES. The Pirates enjoyed enormous success as a result of the dedication of both parents and players and the support provided by local boosters and the La Habra O’KEIKI Team and Coach Al Muramoto. The La Habra O’KEIKI team moved into the next divisional age group (13-14) in the 1992 winter baseball circuit. Playing against older experienced players proved to be a great learning year for the players.
In the Fall of 1993, the La Habra O’KEIKI-ALIIS and the Oxnard O’KEIKI- GOLD COAST PIRATES teams became very strong in their respective age groups of 14 & under and 13 & under during the 1993 winter baseball circuit. By adding players to the La Habra O’ KEIKI – ALIIS from Ventura County, Anaheim, and Diamond Bar the team participated in the following tournaments. The G.A.P./Gold Coast Classic in Oxnard; the Westchester Thanksgiving Day Tournament which the O’KEIKI-ALIIS team placed second (2nd); in the O’KEIKI Winter Tournament the La Habra O’KEIKI-ALIIS team placed first (1st); and in the 1994 O’KEIKI President Day Tournament the O’KEIKI-ALIIS team placed second (2nd).
The Oxnard O’KEIKI – GOLD COAST PIRATES participated in their own tournament – G.A.P./Gold Coast Baseball Classic in Oxnard placed first (1st) in their age bracket, in the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament placed second (2nd) and the POWAY Thanksgiving Day Tournament.
During August of 1994, the La Habra O’KEIKI-ALIIS team made their first out of state trip to Hawaii. There the La Habra O’KEIKI-ALIIS played 4 games against Mid-Pacific Institute High School, a high school power that made the Hawaii High School Baseball State Tournament the past 5 years and winners of 3 straight State Championships (90-92) and a Hawaii all-star Team.
